About Slate Blocks :
Slate is not mined as blocks in large sizes due to its natural form, but rather as coarse rocks or thick, shapeless layers from the quarry. Slate is a cheap stone, since its transport often exceeds its material price, it is usually sold or exported to the market not as a block, but as a finished product, such as floor and wall coverings tiles, roofing tiles, mosaics, etc. But sometimes they sell directly from the quarries to the domestic market in the form of boulders, crushed stone, or flagstone, for gardening, landscaping or other industrial uses. Essentially all slate operations produce blocks by drilling and blasting followed by manual splitting. Different milling techniques are used for roof slate than for floor tile and marking. Both are cut with a diamond saw and divided into desired thicknesses. The Great Depression and Second World War led to the closure of many smaller quarries, and competition from other roofing materials, particularly tiles, resulted in the closure of most of the larger quarries in the 1960s and 1970s. Slate production continues on a much reduced scale.
