What the difference is between onyx and marble?

Onyx is actually a type of marble and it has many of the same properties. The difference is the stunning patterns and veining in each slab. Onyx comes in varying degrees of patterns and a rainbow of stunning colors. Onyx is relatively soft, ranking softer than marble on the Mohs Hardness Scale, and therefore has the potential to scratch and stain. Onyx is more translucent than marble.

Marble is heavier and harder than onyx. Scratch the underside of both objects with a knife. The blade should leave little or no marks on the marble surface. Since onyx is softer, traces remain on its surface. Onyx is more translucent than marble; it allows the light to pass through easily.

Onyx is made of calcite, silica minerals quartz, which is the same mineral that makes up limestone, marble, and travertine.
