Is marble or granite better for mortar and pestle?
Posted by Visitor
Reply to this question
1ReplyBoth can be used if they are made of solid material without cracks. For general use, the best option would be to get one made from a solid stone material like granite or marble. Mortars made from weaker materials like wood, ceramic, or some type of light metal just won't have the strength to break down the ingredients to where they need to be.

Do I need to season a marble or granite mortar and pestle?
Posted by Visitor
Reply to this question
1ReplyYes, you better do. A new stone mortar and pestle set needs to be seasoned to remove stone grit from the inside. The interior surface is left rough and unpolished so the items you're grinding can "grab" the bottom and sides and not jump out of the bowl. Without seasoning it first, you'll end up with sand or grit in your food.

1ReplyNo, we do not recommend. Do not use soap to clean your natural stone mortar and pestle. You may be able to wash stainless steel and ceramic mortar and pestles in the dishwasher. Make sure to follow the cleaning instructions per the instruction manual that came with your mortar and pestle.

Can natural stone mortars, cutting boards be put in the dishwasher?

Reply to this question
1ReplyStone is a lot more durable than wood, but it's still better left out of the dishwasher. Detergents can harm the finish, and exposure to high heat and lots of water can take its toll, and even cause fractures and cracks.

How do I cook steak on a lava stone, steak-grill stone?
Posted by Visitor
Reply to this question
1ReplyBrush steaks with oil and season generously with salt and pepper (really make it rain). Brush any coals or ash from surface of rocks and place 1 steak on top of each. Cook steak until it easily releases from rocks, 6–12 minutes per side for medium-rare, depending on how hot the rocks are.
