How do I clean an old gravestone?

Do no harm – the first step in cleaning a gravestone. Use water only to clean stones. Remove loose, dry material with a soft-bristled brush. Wet the entire stone with water. Wash each face of the stone from the bottom up to avoid streaking. Change the water often.
